Mary Belcher Cobb

Mary Verbena Belcher Cobb began her ninety-two plus year life journey in Shreveport, LA on June 12, 1925 and passed into eternity with her precious Lord and Savior on July 1, 2017.

Mary met her husband of 71 years, John, at the skating rink by pretending to fall to see if he would catch her and therefore test whether or not he was husband material.  Lucky for us all, he passed her “test” and so began their love story. Mary began her 25 plus year banking career at First National bank in Shreveport, but took a hiatus to raise her family. Once her youngest started school, she returned as a teller and eventually finished her career as a loan officer in Metairie, LA.

One of her true passions was sharing the love of travel and square dancing with her husband John.  They would travel non-stop by car and travel trailer through the night surviving on black coffee, Elvis tapes and talking on the CB to go to square dancing competitions.  They traveled to 48 of the 50 states seeing every part of this country, meeting new people, making special memories and sharing their love of dance in their spectacular matching outfits into their 80’s.

But her true joy in life was doing for her family, always choosing the perfect gift, always ensuring everything was equal between everybody, down to the present and dollar count.  Every holiday was an event, and she made everything special including personalized Easter baskets, your favorite perfume or her homemade ”full of butter” biscuits.  Nothing was ever overlooked or forgotten.  But above her thoughtfulness, kindness and unselfishness, her ultimate goal was to ensure her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all those around her knew of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She lived her life to show His love and the ultimate sacrifice He made for everyone so they would choose salvation for their life.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, Harrison McLean Belcher, mother, Verbena Merriman Belcher Lee, her husband John Levi Cobb and daughter Linda Cobb Piwetz, two sisters, and several sister and brother-in-laws.

She is survived by her brother H.M “Sonny” and wife Eva M. Belcher, son, Johnny and wife Beckie Cobb, son James Randall and wife Kathy Cobb.  Grandchildren Pamela Cobb Vail and husband Brent, Terry John Piwetz, Amber M. Cobb, Kendra A. Cobb, Krista Piwetz Loyd and husband Wesley, John Robert Daniel (Bo) Cobb and wife Eryn . Her precious great-grandchildren  Averie Garner, Morgan Loyd, Jackson Cobb, Brayden Piwetz, Marlee Loyd, Levi Garner, Lily Cobb, Josiah Cobb and Emma Vail. Niece Sue Harvey and husband Floyd, as well as many other loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to all of the personnel at Colonial Oaks for all of their warm and loving care during her stay.

The funeral service celebrating Marys’ life will be held at First Baptist Church Pasadena, Thursday, July 6, at 11:00am., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be Friday, July 7, at 10:00am., Forest Park West Cemetery in Shreveport, Louisiana.
