Gilberto A. Flores

P/Sgt. E-7, U.S. Army, Retired, Gilberto A. Flores, 79, went to be with the Lord Monday, December 14, 2009 in Houston with his family by his side. He was born March 1, 1930 in Brownsville, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Diaz and Faustina Amaya Flores; and three brothers, Victor A. Flores, Felix A. Flores and Pedro A. Flores.
Flores is survived by his wife, Ofelia Santiago Flores, his childhood sweetheart. Their friendship began at ages 7 and 9, respectively, blossoming to a loving relationship spanning 70 years.
He is also survived by daughter, Ofelia F. Phillips (Keith); sons, Gilberto S. Flores (Renee), Felix S. Flores (Velma) and Carlos S. Flores; grandchildren, Monica F. Comeaux (Andy), Felix M. Flores, Ariel Marie Flores, Ciara Christine Flores Phillips, Marissa Renee Flores and Miranda Sue Flores; sisters, Micaela Flores and Esther Flores; brothers, Basilio A. Flores and Alfonso A. Flores.
He bravely served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War receiving numerous combat 6medals and awards. After 22 ½ years of service he retired and began a second career with the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Niday Funeral Home, 12440 Beamer Rd, Houston 77089, where a rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Monday, December 21, 2009, at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 11011 Hall Rd., Houston 77089. Rite of Committal will follow with full military honors at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veteran’s Memorial Drive, Houston 77038.
